  • Teachers host monthly Socratic seminars (teacher-led discussions) to help students practice reasoning, clear speaking, listening, and thoughtful engagement with ideas and texts.

  • A parent/guardian serves as the Learning Steward, supporting the student’s day-to-day learning habits, pacing, and accountability at home while the school provides academic instruction and evaluation.

  • Our core subjects (English Language Arts, Math, Science, and History/Social Studies) are taught by degreed teachers who provide instruction, grading/feedback, and academic support.

  • For Arizona families

Arizona state testing applies to public district and charter schools. Private schools set their own assessment approach. Families should not assume Arizona public-school testing requirements apply in the same way to private school enrollment.

    For California families

California testing expectations depend on your homeschool pathway. Please see our California Families page for the PSA/PSP structure and notes on testing expectations.

  • Arizona’s Empowerment Scholarship Account (ESA) is a state program that helps eligible families use education funds for approved educational expenses.

ESA uses approved categories and eligibility rules. We encourage families to review official ESA guidance and confirm how their funds can be applied to their educational plan.

Where can I learn more about ESA?

    Include links to:

    • Arizona families: Porter Hill Academy of Arts and Sciences serves as the private school for enrolled students.

    • California families: Your PSP or your PSA-filed home-based private school serves as the school of record. Please see our California Families page for the correct pathway and documentation expectations.

  • Our program is structured but flexible:

    • Students follow a clear course sequence and pacing expectations.

    • Families can complete lessons on a flexible daily schedule.

  • Item We partner with families through our Learning Steward model. A parent/guardian supports day-to-day learning habits, pacing, and accountability at home, while teachers provide instruction, feedback, and academic evaluation.

    Typical involvement by grade band:

    • K–2: High involvement (daily guidance and support)

    • 3–5: Moderate-to-high involvement (routine support, check-ins)

    • 6–8: Moderate involvement (weekly planning + accountability)

    • 9–12: Light-to-moderate involvement (oversight, planning, transcripts support as needed)

  • Placement is based on grade level, prior coursework, and readiness. Some students may be asked for basic placement information (and in certain cases a writing sample or math placement check) to ensure the best fit.

  • Families typically need:

    • A reliable internet connection

    • A laptop/desktop or tablet (grade-dependent)

    • Headphones/microphone for seminars

    • Google Chrome Browser

  • Item description
  • Not yet. Porter Hill Academy of Arts and Sciences is currently not accredited, and we are actively working toward accreditation.

  • High school courses are organized for credit-bearing completion. Graduation requirements and diploma pathways are communicated during enrollment and advising.

  • Students receive support through teacher feedback, course guidance, and school communication channels. Families can also contact Student Support for help with access, scheduling, or general questions.

  • We welcome families to share learning needs during enrollment. As a private online school, we can often provide reasonable academic supports (for example: extended time, adjusted submission formats, or accessibility-friendly materials) depending on course structure and feasibility.
